An early case of "VOT"

چکیده

This paper focuses on an early instance of the concept of voice onset time (VOT) which is traditionally associated with the work of Leigh Lisker and Arthur Abramson in the 1960s. Evidence is presented here that the idea behind VOT – if not the name – is much older than commonly thought. A publication of an Armenian scientist who worked at the Abbé Rousselot's experimental phonetics laboratory at the Sorbonne in the late 19 century is discussed. That researcher studied several varieties of Armenian and categorized them in terms of what is nowadays called VOT. His paper can be regarded as an exemplar of "modern" phonetic thinking long before the evolution of digital sound processing.

Age of learning affects the authenticity of voice-onset time (VOT) in stop consonants produced in a second language.

This study examined whether Spanish-English bilinguals are able to fully differentiate Spanish and English /t/ according to voice-onset time (VOT) if they learn English as a second language (L2) in early childhood. In experiment 1, VOT was measured in Spanish words spoken by Spanish monolinguals, in English words spoken by English monolinguals, and in Spanish and English words spoken by bilingu...

Voice onset time in Spanish-English spontaneous code-switching

Research on the phonetics of code-switching has focused on voice onset time (VOT) and has yielded mixed results regarding cross-language interaction, possibly due to differences in data used (scripted vs. spontaneous speech) and populations examined (L1 vs. L2 dominant, early vs. late bilinguals). Here VOT was measured in a corpus of spontaneous code-switching speech elicited from a homogeneous...

Speaking rate effects on stops produced by Spanish and English monolinguals and Spanish/English bilinguals.

Four groups of 10 subjects each (English and Spanish monolinguals, and two groups of Spanish/English bilinguals) produced Spanish or English sentences at speaking rates designated 'normal', 'slow', and 'fast'. Voice onset time (VOT) was measured in word-initial tokens of /p/ and /t/ found in sentence-initial, -medial, and -final words. The four groups produced comparable changes in sentence dur...

Effects of age of learning on VOT in voiceless stops produced by near-native L2 speakers

This study is concerned with effects of age of onset (AO) of acquisition on the production of Voice Onset Time (VOT) among near-native L2 speakers. 41 L1 Spanish early and late learners of L2 Swedish, who had carefully been screened for their “nativelike” L2-proficiency, participated in the study. 8 native speakers of Swedish served as control group. Spectral analyses of VOT were carried out on...

Stop consonant production by French-English bilingual children in Southern Alberta

Although Canada has two official languages, French and English, it is well-known that these languages are not used equally across the country. Quebec is French-dominant, with nearly 8 out of 10 people reporting French as their native language compared to 8.3% who are native Anglophones (Statistics Canada, 2012b). In Alberta, English is the mother tongue of 77.0% of residents, with native Franco...
